This game was always going to be a tense affair.
Dagenham a youngish side have been rebuilding and restructuring this season to the huge benefit of the club, as have Burnham.
Burnham needed to approach this game with determination and purpose as the previous encounter resulted in Dagenham winning by quite a margin.
Burnham decided to utilise as many of the Colts players as possible and adding to the ranks were debutants Kyle Page and Jake Gullen.
Dagenham came out confident from the whistle and scored 2 quick tries in the first 10 minutes which unfortunately were unconverted. Burnham seemed slightly out powered in the first 20 minutes and were a little weak in the tackle.
However, Burnham were not going to let Dagenham control this fixture and they managed to exert some pressure and caused restlessness in the Dagenham pack from which they were rewarded with a penalty which Terry Stiffell popped through the posts with ease. 3 points to Burnham.
Dagenham were not to be deterred and scored another try in the 18th minute leaving the half time score at 3-15 to Dagenham
The second half was an amazing transformation. Having prevented Dagenham from scoring any points for the last 20 minutes of the first half appeared to have given Burnham confidence, and with tremendous destructive play from Al Gregory and Liam Hanna the ball managed to find its way out to the backs and Burnham's 1st try was from Callum Wiffen reaching over the line to just score near the corner, this was very well converted by Terry Stiffell.
Burnham's second and last try was from Luke Cowell who scored in a similar position to the first try as he steam rollered over the try line, unfortunately the conversion was narrowly missed, actually one flag went up and one stayed down - so close, the crowd were roaring from both teams supporters.
Burnham continued to play the last 20 minutes of the game with immense pressure and passion, and although down to 14 men after our second yellow card of the match they continue with strength.
Burnham managed to prevent Dagenham from scoring for the whole of the second half. With five minutes left, the score was 15 all. Dagenham were exerting all the pressure, but outstanding defence from the whole team forced Dagenham to make mistakes. Especially not taking the decision to kick a penalty but instead run for a try. Burnham kept the opposition away from the try line and pushed them back.
In the dying seconds of the match Burnham had all the play and got themselves into a scoring position. 13 seconds on the clock and back up to 15 players. Burnham lineout was contested and lost. FINAL WHISTLE. 15-15.
A fantastic match the youth players were outstanding. A very bright future lays ahead.
