Burnham 1st team opened their Essex Merit Table 3 season with a home fixture against Pegasus Palmerians. In excellent playing conditions, both sides played open rugby in a keenly contested fixture. Traditionally this fixture with Pegasus was always a close affair, and this clearly was going to be the case this time around. With a healthy crowd at home, Burnham had the edge in the 1st half, with some entertaining and open rugby, that resulted in a couple of tries that were successfully converted. Half-time resulted in a resurgent Pegasus team, who started to play to their strengths. Putting pressure into their forward game they managed to launch their attacking phases of play and were rewarded with a couple of scores. The second half then became a battle of wills, and it was only into the latter part of the game that Burnham were able to use their back line to exploit the gaps and put the game out of reach of Pegasus.
Result was 38-20 to Burnham, however this was an excellent game played in a competitive spirit by both sides.
Man of the match went to Luke Cowell
Burnham face South Woodham Ferrers away next weekend.
