Burnham 1st team return to wining ways!
Great result for 1st team
Burnham hosted Bancroft on what on paper looked to be a very tough fixture. The clubs have met in both the league and cup over previous years, and Bancroft had edged those games.
The kick-off coincided with Burnham hosting their community day and beer festival, unfortunately the weather which had been excellent running up to the weekend, was overcast and a steady drizzle was present. That said, there was a good turnout on the touchline, no doubt influenced by the beer festival, bbq and other activities.
Burnham clearly had been gorging on something, and came out with determination and purpose. Within two minutes of the start, they carved an opportunity out resulting in a try for Tom Braybrook. The conversion was missed, but it was clear that Burnham meant business. Two minutes later another well worked set of moves and continuous pressure told, with James Lynch going over for another try. Four minutes in, ten points up, could this be a cricket score? Three minutes later, and another try, this time Tom Wright blistering down the wing and going over. Another two minutes later and Tom Braybrook goes over again. Nine minutes into the game and 20-0 up. The crowd were being entertained with champagne rugby, and were demanding more. The game started to then settle down, in fairness to Bancroft they regrouped, and starting to play their game. Burnham took their foot off the gas, and got dragged into a forwards game. Not where we wanted to be. Bancroft were rewarded for their endeavor in the 18th minute with a try. Was the game back on? Six minutes later Burnham finally got back into their stride, and were rewarded with a try by Billy Godley, and converted by Tom Wright. They then scored two further tries, with Tom Braybrook scoring his hatrick, and the very promising George Duck adding another. Both tries converted by Tom Wright and the returning Ewan Allen. Half-time and Burnham 39-5 up.
The second half started much slower, and clearly the half-time break took the momentum out of Burnham. They finally broke through with Conall Hornett scoring. Bancroft though were not for giving up and with great spirit and determination scored two late tries, converting one. Full time Burnham 41-17 winners.
In fairness to Bancroft, the team had struggled with injuries, and a number of their regular players were not available. The away fixture will be a different event.
Next Saturday, Burnham travel away to Basildon II. Promises to be a difficulty fixture, with Basildon playing extremely well. Winning that game could put Burnham near the top of the table. As it is, Burnham are 4th in the league, and hopefully will continue to progress.
