Burnham U8's travelled to Southend today and faced a very large and well coached squad.
However, within seconds of the first whistle blowing, Burnham showed the larger club what they were capable of. With some great forward running and early passing they scored a quick try. However Southend soon showed Burnham that they need to up there game in defensive by scoring a try straight away. The game continued to be played at a very quick pace, but with some silly missed passes from Burnham, Southend were able to win the game 9-6.
The second game was much closer. Burnham continued to play some lovely open rugby and managed to cut down on the silly mistakes. They also got their defensive game together and produced two awesome 7 tag turnovers. This resulted in Burnham beating Southend 9-8.
This left the last game as the decider. Quite rightly Southend used their whole squad of 20 players for this game to make sure that all players got equal game time. This meant Burnham had to play their socks off and keep going in the second half against fresher legs. Burnham stepped up to the mark. They carried on with their amazing attacking play and scored some inspired tries. They also carried on the great tagging and managed another 7 tag turnover. The game was 8-8 in the dying seconds of the match and Burnham had the ball, however with some wrong calls of tag from Southend and miscommunication from Burnham, the ball was turned over and Southend managed to get a last second try to win the game.
Both teams showed how Rugby should be played and came of the pitch with smiles on their faces.
Burnham's player of the week went to Angus Beale for his great defensive play on the wing and awesome attacking play both with and without the ball.
