In our last home game of the season Burnham played Stanford at home. Stanford arrived with only six players in the 7,8 and 9 age groups. We had a team of 10 so we lent them two players to make two teams of eight and played three games.
With a few players out ill and/or recovering from holiday and last weeks festival, we had a slow start to the game allowing Stanford in for the first try but not until we had kept then at bay by taking a number of tags. Once we had the ball we showed our pace and passing. Although Stanford took a number of tags we scored a try levelling the score. This was a low scoring game and Stanford managed a turnover from a lose ball. Stanford won the first Game 7:5.
Due to the effort put in by both teams into the first game, we reduced the teams sizes down to 6 allowing each a few subs or to have a rest. Burnham started the second game and and just before the try line Stanford managed to turnover the ball and score the first try. This was a much closer game with many tags taken and both teams turning over the ball a number of times. Stanford won 5:3.
The final game was open to any one with enough energy to continue. This was a great game as each teams players became more tired the better they played. As the players could not just rely on speed, they had to work as a team and pass the ball accurately. Both defences were great and each team managed to force a couple of turnovers. Final score Stanford win 6:4.
Burnham player of the day was Thomas Griffin, for team work tagging and scoring a great try. A special mention must go out to nancy Roberts from the under 7's for playing today and for Patrick Smyth and Thomas Courts for playing for Stanford.
