U10s Stand Tall in Thurrock Test

Burnham U10s arrived in Thurrock expecting a good, competitive fixture – and that is exactly what they got.

From the first warm-up it was clear this would be no gentle afternoon. Thurrock’s squad absolutely dwarfed Burnham’s, but as ever our U10s weren’t fazed, setting about their work with their usual calm, business-like attitude.

Thurrock proved to be a very different beast to the sides faced so far this season, bringing a whole new level of intensity to the breakdown. It was a shock to the system at first, but credit to Burnham: the players adapted brilliantly and raised their own standards to meet the challenge head-on.

Tackles flew in at a furious rate. Burnham were given a real lesson in how to ruck by a well-drilled home side, yet this team simply doesn’t know how to give up. Heads stayed up, shoulders stayed square, and they continued to batter the Thurrock line with relentless defence and determined attacking play.

As the matches went on, Burnham became sharper at getting to the breakdown quickly, even if the ferocity of the Thurrock players remained tough to handle. Still, our valiant U10s never took a backward step. No team kept their attack quiet for long, and Burnham gave every defence they faced a thorough examination.

It was probably the toughest set of contests these players have ever faced, but the way they stood up, adapted and kept going from first whistle to last meant Thurrock went home with plenty to think about too.

Coach Katherine was full of praise afterwards, encouraging the squad to rest up following such a bruising afternoon. With a small group it’s not always easy to run full rucking drills, but this team specialises in beating the odds – and they will have learned a huge amount from this experience.

Every single player had to raise their game, and every single one should be proud of their performance. Someone, though, had to take home the trophy this week, and Albie’s consistency across all the matches saw him pip a brilliant bunch of teammates to the honour.

Well done Albie – and well done Burnham U10s. A superb team performance, packed with grit, courage and character.
