The U10s headed to Thurrock for the second time this season to put their skills to the test. After weeks of hard work in training there were growing signs that the team were beginning to fire on all cylinders, and hopes were high for the day ahead.
The morning didn’t begin smoothly. Parking proved to be a nightmare, which meant the warm-up was disrupted as players and parents battled to reach the pitches in time. Thankfully, that was where the chaos ended. From the first whistle to the final whistle, Burnham delivered one of their finest displays of the season.
This festival brought together teams that Burnham have struggled against earlier in the year - sides packed with physically imposing and well-drilled players. It was very much a sink-or-swim scenario. Burnham have often battled bravely this season but sometimes struggled to find their groove. Today, though, things really clicked.
Even without Harry, one of the team’s most powerful players, the squad gelled brilliantly. Every player gave 100% effort and there were moments of truly exceptional play. Burnham were lightning quick to the breakdown, rucking furiously. They didn’t win every contest on the ground, but they competed in almost every one. Players who had previously shown a reluctance to get stuck in were suddenly throwing themselves into the fight.
In attack there were some beautiful passages of play. Players who might previously have held onto the ball instead showed real awareness, offloading to teammates and stretching opposition defences. This is a team that is clearly growing and learning to play for each other.
Burnham didn’t win every game, but they gave every opponent a seriously tough contest and came away with at least three victories from their five matches. It’s safe to say that every team present will remember Burnham—and when they next appear on the fixture list, they’ll know they’re in for a very tough day.
By the final whistle of the last match, the Burnham players looked as tired as they’ve ever been. Visibly exhausted, they had emptied their tanks across five fiercely contested matches against some of the strongest teams in the region. Even if they had played poorly they would have deserved huge credit for the effort they gave—but in fact they produced their best performance of the season.
Katherine and Dan were thrilled with the effort shown by every player. They took time afterwards to praise each of them individually for the step up they had made. What truly made the day special, though, was how well the team gelled together to produce one of their finest collective performances.
As always on days like this, choosing a Player of the Day was incredibly difficult.
Josh - arrived first and set the tone immediately. Boots on, gum shield in and raring to go, he was fired up from the start. Despite the cold, Josh didn’t stop all day. He linked play brilliantly between defence and attack, offloading in a controlled way and stretching opposition defences with his movement.
Henry - was on fire. His tackling, rucking and running were all outstanding. Henry clearly loves the game and plays with huge enthusiasm. After a slow start earlier in the season with tackling and rucking, he has grown into one of the team’s most important players. His handling and understanding of the game are excellent, allowing him to make smart decisions about when to commit and when to hold back. He also produced a couple of superb try-saving tackles.
Jack - delivered an absolutely outstanding performance. An incredibly intelligent rugby player and powerful runner, Jack reads the game exceptionally well. While many players at this age run the ball until they are tackled, Jack is always thinking about the right play—drawing defenders before making well-timed passes or choosing the perfect moment to run. Katherine also noted a huge increase in his tackling and rucking today. A fantastic performance from a young player who looks every bit a fly-half in the making.
Thomas - was relentless—an opposition nightmare who always wants the ball. He threw himself into rucks and often emerged with possession, making him both invaluable to Burnham and hugely frustrating for opposing teams. Thomas is one of the team’s key players and always gives Burnham a chance of winning the ball on the ground. Add to that his powerful running and he is incredibly difficult for defenders to stop. If he can work on his TREDS a little and resist the temptation to argue with the referee, he has all the makings of a fantastic rugby player.
Albie - once again showed why he is one of the team’s most ferocious tacklers. Katherine was delighted with his performance, particularly the improvements in his tackling technique. Gone were the swinging tackles—replaced with the low contact, wrap and drive the team have been practising in training. Albie is a reliable teammate who rarely misses a tackle and always gives 100%. His constant improvement makes him a crucial part of what is turning this team into such a formidable unit.
Jenson - was lively throughout the day. Katherine praised the effort Jenson puts into improving his game, and the results were clear to see. He worked tirelessly in both attack and defence—running with the ball, supporting teammates and filling gaps in the defensive line. It was a workmanlike performance and a great example of team rugby.
Billy - also worked incredibly hard throughout the festival. His growing confidence in tackling and rucking was on full display as he threw himself into the physical battles, taking a few knocks along the way. By the end of the day he was completely exhausted, having given absolutely everything. Billy has always shown great intelligence in reading the game and positioning himself well, but today he matched that with an outstanding physical performance against some of the toughest sides Burnham have faced this season.
George - simply did not stop all day, earning himself Player of the Day in the process. The number of tackles he made was extraordinary, earning him a couple of painful scratches on the legs in the process. A true all-rounder, George excels in every aspect of the game. His tackling is relentless, he is lightning fast to the ruck and extremely difficult to shift once he gets there. He competes strongly on the floor, bounces back to his feet in seconds and is ready to tackle again immediately.
On top of all that defensive work, George still found the energy to launch powerful attacking runs and support his teammates in attack. His stamina is incredible and his work rate never drops. It was a phenomenal performance and a thoroughly deserved Player of the Match award.
Well done George. And well done Burnham U10s.
A memorable festival where every player did themselves, and the club, proud.
