This week the warriors travelled to Thurrock to take part on a Tri Tournament consisting of Thurrock, Billericay & Chelmsford; having played all of these sides this season we knew it would be a great challenge for the squad.
First up was Billericay who we had a played at the start of the season in a tough encounter and this proved to be the same, both teams competing hard at the breakdown down and snuffling out attacks. It was Billericay who struck first with two quick fire tries due to some lapsed tackling from Burnham, but heads did not drop and Burnham began to put pressure on their opponents, Sebastian jump on the warriors first opportunity to run in for the score. Confidence was building and it wasn't long before Burnham were level with a strong carry and score from Alfie - that was it for the first game, both teams taking a fair draw.
Onto Chelmsford and a much improved performance to start with, good work at the breakdown and some nice running lines help the Warriors to a 3 score lead, Harrison, Thomas & Regan bagging the tries this time. However Burnham soon learnt that a game is never over until the final whistle as Chelmsford raised their game and came back with two second half scores that left the warriors scrambling around the pitch ensuring the lead was kept, and it was, just.
So, next up was Thurrock, by far the standout team we have played this year. Having played them recently the warriors knew what to expect and came out fired up, competing well at the breakdown and tackling well to keep the Thurrock attack at bay. The game was level pegging but alas Burnham made life difficult for themselves with some stray passes that went straight to Thurrock's flyers who raced into score. Did this deflate the warriors, not at all, time and again Burnham marched up the field to pressure Thurrock and did cross their line with a strong carry and score from Cass. So the game ended with a loss and the better team was successful..... however, if passes had gone to hand, a few more tackles made then I wonder what the outcome could have been.
A great effort by the squad against good opposition which in turn will make us a better side. Some excellent performances out there today, Sebastian was outstanding the whole way through with his tackling and breakdown work, some great carries from Thomas, Regan, Louis, Bear, Huxley and Cass. Alfie standing in at flyhalf did a sterling job, the flyers on the wing Harry and Shane made some great yardage with ball in hand with Tilly and Jude battling hard at the breakdown.
This weeks player of the day went to Harrison who performed excellently throughout and kept his opponents guessing all day long.
Plenty to work on over the next couple of sessions and lots to build on.
