The Warriors hosted Basildon in a re-arranged fixture from the previous weekend, although conditions had improved it was still touch and go if the game would go ahead, fortunately the pitches remained in good order from the senior game the day before so it was game on!
A full squad of warriors descended onto the 1st team pitch all eager and excited to play some rugby and despite the rain and cold they played some truly inspired rugby. From the first whistle Burnham were relentless in their desire to put Basildon under constant pressure with wave after wave of attacking rugby that left the opposition shell shocked. Any signs of potential attack from Basildon where stifled by some textbook tackling from the entire team, countering the breakdown area and then releasing the Burnham backline to devastating effect.
Basildon had no answer for the rugby that was being played and considering the conditions it was amazing to see; line breaks were backed up with support runners, big bulldozing carries enabled good field position and breakdowns were secured enabling quick ball with Toby & Ivy fulfilling the flyhalf roles to good effect and executing superbly some backline drills that the coaching team have been working on.
Basildon to their credit were rewarded with a few scores of their own but unfortunately the worsening conditions and score line were a little too much for our visitors and they called the game after only two quarters played.
This didn't stop the Warriors wanting more, so we played one final game amongst ourselves, more for a game time and fitness perspective - the supporters seems delighted by this! (LOL)
So that was that and a good day on the pitch once again, the amazing Munch Bunch that want to play open free flowing rugby and it really showed on the pitch, week on week improvements both individually and as a team.
This weeks player of the match without doubt went to Sebastian, his overall performance was outstanding as was his desire to be everywhere on the pitch, great job!
Our thanks to our good friends at Basildon, we look forward to the return fixture in hopefully better conditions.
