As the curtain falls on a truly remarkable season, Burnham U9s’ Awards Day reflected the highs, the lows, and the unbreakable spirit that defines this club. What should have been a purely celebratory occasion began on a sombre note, as we learned of the passing of Denise — a cornerstone of the club and one of the countless unsung heroes who make days like this possible. Losing someone so devoted to the fabric of our club on a day dedicated to its future stars was heartbreaking. And yet, in the truest spirit of rugby, the club rallied together. The day became a tribute not just to our players, but to the community and character that Denise embodied.
It’s been a season to remember — one filled with growth, resilience, and transformation. If my match reports have sounded overly positive, that’s partly because they were written by someone who has seen these players grow since their earliest rugby days — and yes, there’s bias in that. But make no mistake: this is a special group. That belief isn’t mine alone — it’s echoed in the U9s being named Mini’s Team of the Year.
Under the inspiring leadership of Katherine and Dan — supported by a rotating cast of guest coaches — this team has grown from nervous individuals into a cohesive, confident unit. They didn’t just learn to tackle; they learned to trust each other, to read the game, to support and to lead. Time and again, opposition coaches praised their skill, sportsmanship, and intensity. Huge thanks should go to Katherine and Dan for everything they’ve done to help our players, who have all shone this season.
Here’s a look back at the incredible efforts of each player who made this season unforgettable:
Albie
Albie quickly became one of the team’s most dependable defenders, tackling with an intensity that few could match. Rarely taking a backward step, he consistently shut down attacking threats before they could develop. Offensively, his speed and instinct made him a nightmare for defences. Albie has grown into a complete player and is a vital part of Burnham’s success.
Amelia
Amelia started the year unsure about the physical side of the game, but what a transformation we witnessed. She not only grew in confidence but began to relish the challenge, often surprising the boys with her last ditch tackles. Her blistering speed in open play became a crucial outlet for the team’s attack. She proudly flies the flag for the girls and is a fantastic role model for others looking to join.
Daniel
Daniel may have joined halfway through the season, but he wasted no time in making his mark. Whether scoring tries, making tackles, or supporting teammates, he embraced every challenge with enthusiasm. Encouragingly, for a football convert, his commitment to the TREDS values was exceptional — always encouraging, always aware, always kind. A wonderful addition to the squad and someone we can’t wait to see develop further next year.
Harry
Harry plays with power, pace, and purpose. One of Burnham’s most dangerous runners, once he’s in full flight, few can stop him. As the season progressed, Harry added another dimension to his game — using his ability to draw in defenders and then offload to teammates in space. His game intelligence is growing rapidly, and he’s become a cornerstone of the team’s attacking strategy.
Josh
Josh’s relentless energy and enthusiasm are infectious. He never stops running, constantly probing defences and seeking out gaps. His commitment to the team and willingness to keep going, even when things don’t come off, are huge assets. Josh improved steadily throughout the season and has become one of the most popular and determined players in the group.
Thomas
Thomas is lightning quick and has used that speed to great effect all year. What’s been most impressive, though, is his developing awareness — making more tackles, supporting play better, and becoming more confident in passing. His growth in all areas of the game shows just how far he’s come, and he’ll be a big threat as he continues to develop.
Billy – Coach’s Player of the Season
Billy has had a standout season. He started with some hesitation but worked hard on his tackling and confidence in contact. As his understanding of the game grew, so did his influence — often positioning himself smartly, staying calm under pressure, and making great decisions. Towards the end of the season, at Katherine’s request,he took on the scrum half role with maturity beyond his years (and maturity beyond most scrum halves). A hugely popular player with his team mates, coaches and parents alike and a deserved winner of Coach’s Player of the Season.
Henry – Players’ Player of the Season
Henry embodies everything you want in a rugby player — powerful, composed, and endlessly committed. He trains and studies the game outside of club commitments, and it shows. He reads the game superbly, positions himself intelligently, and is a key communicator on the pitch. His powerful runs and unflappable attitude have inspired teammates all season. He is a great young rugby player and a role model to those around him. It’s no surprise he won Players’ Player of the Season for the second year running.
George – Supporter’s Player of the Year
George is a complete rugby player. Fierce in the tackle, lightning quick, and constantly scanning for options, his all-round game is incredibly strong. His ability to combine with teammates and read the game makes him a constant threat. George’s presence lifts those around him — when he plays well, the whole team steps up. A worthy and popular choice for Supporter’s Player of the Year.
These awards were richly deserved, but the incredible progress made by this group didn’t happen by chance. At the heart of it all has been the tireless dedication of Katherine and Dan. With no previous coaching experience, they stepped up in 2022 when no one else could, taking on the U7s and building something truly special. Week in, week out on chilly, rain soaked Thursdays and Sundays—they’ve committed their time, energy, and passion to give these kids the opportunity to play, grow, and thrive. Katherine, in particular, has developed not only her own understanding of the game but also one of the most impressive young teams in the region. She leads with care, consistency and extreme patience— we couldn’t be prouder to see her recognised as Coach of the Year.
So Congratulations Katherine - Coach of the Year, Congratulations to Billy, Henry, and George—our Players of the Year—and to the entire squad for earning the title Team of the Year.
What a year. What a journey. What a team.
Roll on U10s!
