In sparkling sunshine, Burnham headed to Canvey in their first fixture of the season. Both teams started with some joint training which was well run by the Canvey coaches, with some tackling practice in order.
The team of Max, Charlie (1), Stefan, Elliott, Charlie (2), joined with a couple of Canvey players, and the first of two games started. Clearly some of the early season training had paid off, and both teams showed some excellent ball handling skills, and enthusiastic tackling. The game was played at a high pace, with all the players wanting to get time on the ball. Eventually the first game finished in a very close affair with Burnham losing by a single try Canvey 4, Burnham 3
A quick stop for water and a breather (as much for the coaches as the kids!), and the second half started again. Canvey bolstered by some very impressive girls in their ranks quickly scored a couple of tries, but Burnham were not giving up. Elliott took the ball from a restart, and gave one of those barn storming runs, powering through Canvey, only to be denied close to the line. Burnham continued to defend robustly, with Max, Stefan and Charlie (1) knocking down their opposition. Max in particular was like a missile homing in on every target. Charlie (2) then took a leaf out of Elliott's book, and went on a run, with Canvey players clinging to him.
The second game ended up Canvey 7, Burnham 3.
Overall though a positive performance from the team, and all the boys should be proud of their contribution and effort.
Special thanks to Canvey as well, really good atmosphere and a credit to youth rugby!
Next week, the team face Basildon at home....
