On a sunny Sunday morning Burnham U13s took on Stanford in their first league game.
Burnham kicked off the first half with Stanford running the ball back into Burnham's half and continued to attack across the pitch. Burnham stood tall and defended their half consistently for the first 10 minutes of the game sadly unable to get any decent ball retention. Then Burnham changed their game plan and notched up a gear and started to probe into Stanford's half and winning some fantastic scrum balls against the head and they consistently pressurised the Stanford defensive line. Fine play and link from the forwards to scrum half who played ball and eventually Burnham's No 10 to find the try line and go over on the corner. The half continued with Burnham using the ball well, the Stanford forwards kept running and probing but Burnham held their ground with some superb work in the forwards, they again used the ball with another fine attack running by the backs with an excellent off load to the inside centre to go over for another super try.
Half time 10-0
Second half Stanford kicked off with immense determination and change of tactics and started to move the ball, Burnham reacted with super tackles and defensive pressure which meant they consistently held back the attacks and went on to the counter attack with a great breakaway , only for last ditch tackle to enable Stanford to counter attack themselves through the middle to run in a well deserved try. This was a close and entertaining contest between two evenly match sides, midway through the half both teams showing a little tiredness but continued to battle and tackle and with just 5 minutes to go Burnham won an attacking scrum and moved the ball out using the overlap the Burnham winger dazzled past a defender to go over in the corner.
Stanford would not give up though and they rallied in the last few minutes and sat in Burnham's 5 metre line constantly throwing all they hand at Burnham, but Burnham stood their ground and the forwards held the determined forwards from Standford at bay and some mighty tackling from the backs and then the final whistle blew, with both Supporters cheering on these fantastic players for another entertaining game, thanks to both sets of Parents today who showed great respect to the ref and to the players.

Coaches today praised the Team for the all round contribution of all! The scrum training has worked wonders, two second rows with link play and loose ball, the scrum half again harassed , Captain again had a huge role and the backs with link play and the new full back covering every inch of the park. Some have not played in certain positions today, but it did not show. Huge well done to all! Keep it up !
