Burnham the Beast from the East v Basildon
Chilly wind from the East and bright sunny morning, Burnham at home to Basildon.
Basildon won the toss and elected to change ends and kick off on this extremely chilly morning and the start of some fantastic mornings rugby.
Burnham received the high ball from kick off and made progress into Basildon territory with some thumping runs and off loads and slowly made their way up field. Basildon continued to defend and some crunching tackles lead to some knock ons in first 5 minutes and numerous scrums that where fiercely contested with both sides winning and losing ball. It was a tight contest in the middle of the pitch and Basildon attacked to only loose the ball in the ruck. With quick ball and off load Burnham's No8 run past 3 Basildon players and brushing aside another to go over and score in front of the posts.
Burnham where playing like Beasts big and strong and defended well. They continued to disrupt the ball at the breakdown and another break and fine passing for the Hooker to storm through Basildon defence to go over for another score. Burnham's scrumhalf like a terrier today at the scrum base . But Basildon continued to fight and from a resulting knock on and penalty they managed to maul to the try line and pop the ball out to score. Numerous penalties from both sides during this half and it was even battle from both sides. Half time 10-5
Burnham kicked off the second half with slight advantage with the wind continued to press Basildon hard in their half. Giving away a penalty for off side Basildon took it quick and managed to off load with some great defence eventually the ball carried to their winger who broke away to even the scores.
Burnham retook the lead with great kick a chase and pressure wining ruck after ruck and fast pick up and go and layoff to Burnham's hooker to score over in the corner to retake the lead. Basildon would not drop and continued to hit back with a try from a storming run, both sides now showing some tiredness. The scores level at 15-15 Burnham still playing great rugby showed determination from their own 5 metre line fiercely defending and winning a penalty. The ball hoofed up to the half way for Burnham to start attack again with ball through hand Burnham's fullback joined the line and stormed through to score and take the lead with a few minutes remaining and the Supporters roaring on both sides Basildon managed to pull a try to even the score at 20-20. The final whistle blew when Burnham attacking on Basildon's 5 metre line trying to sneak a winner for the ball eventually popping out and going into touch. Great display of Rugby from both sides today. Final score 20-20
