The first match of the season was played in bright sunshine away at Canvey Island. Canvey, as always, provided great hospitality. The match opened with Burnham receiving the kick off, which Banks caught and returned for the opening try! Burnham initially dominated and ran in several tries, as a result of great teamwork. After a short break for a small injury, Canvey, who hadn’t dropped their heads, got into their stride and scored to reduce the deficit. This continued after half time, making the game much closer and enjoyable for both teams. Once Burnham caught their breath, they scored two further tries to make the final score 8-6. The try scorers were Bennett, Stubbings, Courts, Clarke and Banks. It was impossible to pick a player of the match due to the strength of the team performance. The award was therefore given to the team as a whole.
